My Favorite Things to Do in Ushuaia, Argentina, the Gateway to Antarctica

I discovered plenty of things to do in Ushuaia during the three days I spent there before an Antarctica cruise

Despite being at the “End of the World” in South America, the city of Ushuaia, Argentina, gets a lot of traffic during the warmer weather season. It’s the jumping-off point for cruises to Antarctica, arguably the more accurate end of the world.

Discovering Things to Do in Puerto Natales, The Gateway to Torres del Paine in Chile’s Patagonia

We found a lot of different things to do in Puerto Natales, Chile during the week we stayed there.

Puerto Natales is the closest gateway town to the popular Torres del Paine National Park in Chile’s Southern Patagonia region. After our three days inside the Torres de Paine park, we stayed another week in Puerto Natales to explore more of the region and to give my husband time to do some fly fishing.

Three Days in Torres del Paine From A Non-Hiker’s Perspective

With three days in Torres del Paine we had plenty of time to take in the sights at a leisurely pace

Chile’s Patagonia Region is known for its impressive mountain landscapes. It also draws the adventure-loving, trekking crowd. For me, those backpacking and hiking days are behind me. I like a bed and a warm shower at the end of the day. That did not stop me from exploring and enjoying the breathtaking beauty of Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park in luxurious comfort.

Two days with the Punta Arenas Penguins

We went to Punta Arenas, Chile specifically to see the two penguin colonies nearby

On our three-week Patagonia trip, my husband and I side-tripped to Punta Arenas for the sole purpose of seeing penguins. For those who don’t want to go to Antarctica, this is a (relatively) easy way to see penguins up close and personal in their natural environment.

Two penguin colonies could be visited as day trips from Punta Arenas. The king penguin colony on Tierra del Fuego was a very, very long day trip. Somewhat closer on Magdalena Island was a colony of gentoo penguins.

Two Days in Los Glacieres National Park – The Best of Argentina’s Patagonia Region

Our Patagonia adventures started with two days in Los Glacieres National Park in Argentina

Spanning the southern tips of Argentina and Chile, Patagonia is known for tall mountains, deep fjords, and numerous glaciers spreading their arms from the great Southern Patagonia Icefield. The Argentinian and Chilean sides of Patagonia are distinctly different, and it was worth seeing both sides.

Penguins and Ice and So Much More – My Favorite Princess Cruise Antarctica Photos

These are some of my favorite Princess cruise Antarctica photos from my trip on the Sapphire Princess that took me around South America and to the Antarctic peninsula. It was quite the scenic adventure.

To say that I took a lot of photos on a Princess cruise to South America and Antarctica is a huge understatement. But if this was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip, then I was going to make sure I captured every moment.

The feature photo for this post was recognized with an Honorable Mention award in the Landscape and Nature category in the 2023 North American Travel Journalists Association Excellence in Travel Journalism competition.

Reflections from 2023

My annual recap after an incredible year of travel all over the globe.

“….changes in latitude, changes in attitude….”

This was certainly a year for the record books for me as I travelled across latitudes from the Antarctic all the way up to the Arctic. I can’t believe how many bucket list trips I was fortunate to indulge in. I have become very spoiled by all my travels this year, and I am very appreciative of the many opportunities I’ve had to see so many special places around the world.

Reflections from 2019 – An Epic Year of Travel

This was an epic year of travel for me – the best ever. I was very fortunate to be able to go somewhere special each month.

I visited National Parks in the US  as well as a few new places in my home country. I had a completely unique experience as a volunteer citizen scientist in Kenya. And my feet touched the soil of South America for the first time. To top it all off, I was totally spoiled on a one of a kind barge cruise on the Burgundy Canal in France. I don’t think any year in travel can get much better.
