Many of the quilt designs that I make are inspired by my travel destinations. In this case, the quilt came first, but I really was not sure what to do with it. Then, when I had plans to go to Fairbanks, Alaska, for the midnight sun season, I knew this was the perfect quilt to take along. Continue reading ““Under the Midnight Sun” – Original Quilt Design”
This kaleidoscope quilt was the beginning of my quilting passion. It was the very first quilt I ever made about twenty-five years ago. (NO-I don’t believe in starting easy). Continue reading “Kaleidoscope Quilt Design”
Quilt Inspiration – I made this quilt to commemorate our 30th wedding anniversary trip to Venice. Blue and red seem to be the traditional colors of Venice – gondoliers wear blue-and-white or red-and-white striped shirts. The traditional carnival masks tend to use red or blue diamond patterns, so I knew those would be the predominant colors in the quilt.

Quilt Inspiration – This Burano Sampler quilt was inspired by the many colorful houses on the island of Burano in the Venetian Lagoon. Each of the houses on Burano is painted a different bright shade, so that as you are walking through the town, it feels like you are in the middle of a big box of crayons.

This was one of the first quilts I started, and many years later, once the kids were off to college and I had more time, it was also one of the first quilts I finally finished. It also taught me that there can still be beauty in imperfection, even if the mistake is huge.

Discover the Quilt Gardens in the heart of Amish country in Elkhart county Indiana as you follow the Heritage Trail to see gardens designed like quilt blocks.
I’ve seen quilts displayed on beds and hanging on museum walls. I’ve also seen quilt designs painted on barns and on the sides of buildings. But one of the most unusual quilt displays I’ve seen has to be the Quilt Gardens in Elkhart, Indiana. More than one million blooms make up seventeen large quilt designs that are on display each year from May 30 to Sept. 15.
One of the Rothschild’s giraffes at Nairobi’s Giraffe Center checks out the other side of my African inspired quilt. Couldn’t tell if he liked it or not.

Quilt Inspiration – I found this original African fabric panel at a quilt show and knew I would need to use it in my African-inspired quilt as a colorful reminder of my first trip to Africa.
On that first trip, I only brought the quilt top to photograph because of space and luggage weight limitations. On that Africa trip, I also bought a batik panel at one of the roadside vendors, which I used on the back of the quilt. By the time I went back to Kenya on my most recent trip, the quilt was finished, and I took it back with me so I could photograph it complete on location. I made this beautiful Elizabeth Hartman quilt using a variety of her animal themed patterns.
My son: “You know mom, the wall in your grandson’s room would look really good with a quilt hanging on it”.
How could I ignore a hint like that.
