PhotoPOSTcard: A Classic California Sunset

I love to watch sunrises and sunsets over water. But since I am not much of a morning person, sunsets on the west coast are my favorite. This one was especially dramatic as the tide was going out at Asilomar State Beach on the Monterrey Peninsula in California.  I was there for a quilting class with the Empty Spools Seminars program and the spectacular beach sunsets were a bonus.

PhotoPOSTcard: Sunset over the Great Fountain Geyser

I had all but given up on a nice sunset while visiting Yellowstone on this day. It had been cloudy and raining all day and I did not think it would clear up. Then, all of a sudden a rainbow came out just before sunset and the clouds miraculously started to clear up just as the sun started going down. It resulted in one of the most fiery red sunsets I have ever seen – appropriate for a (potentially) fiery geyser area.

PhotoPOSTcard: Midnight in Fairbanks, Alaska

This is what midnight looks like in the land of the midnight sun in Fairbanks, Alaska in mid July. I went to the Chena Lakes Recreation Area to get an unobstructed view of the setting sun over water. The sun did dip below the horizon, but just barely, so that it was this bright all night long.

PhotoPOSTcard: Sotol Vista Sunset

Another great spot for watching the sunset in Big Bend National Park is the Sotol Vista viewpoint. When I got there just before sunset, I found that the area had recently experienced a wildfire. The ground was still charcoal black, many of the sotol plants were yellow and dried out, and there was still a slight burnt odor in the air. But none of this detracted from the view across the desert toward the Santa Elena canyon in the distance as the sun dipped below the clouds for a spectacular sunset. Make sure you catch a Sotol Vista sunset when you visit.

PhotoPOSTcard: A Perfect Big Bend Sunset Windows View

One of the easiest and most rewarding trails in Big Bend National Park is the 0.3 mile Windows View Nature trail.  The best and most popular time to walk this easy trail is at sunset – and you can see why. Benches along the paved walkway let you sit and enjoy mother nature’s show.  In this photo, I’ve included a silhouetted of one of the many desert plants in the park, a common sotol with its  mound of spiky leaves and its tall flower stalk.

PhotoPOSTcard: Prague Sunset View from the Old Town Hall

Prague’s Old Town Hall is best known for its elaborate astronomical clock. Most people don’t go beyond standing in front of the clock at the top of the hour to watch the various pieces go through their motions. But you can also take a guided tour of the inside of the Old Town Hall and learn about its history and architecture dating back to the 16th century. My favorite experience was climbing to the top of the tower and getting this beautiful sunset view of the Prague skyline and the castle.

PhotoPOSTcard: A Baobab Sunset

We were treated to a spectacular sunset on our last evening on safari in Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park. One of the things that made this park unique from the others we had visited was not the animal life, but rather, the plant life – the baobab trees to be specific. The distinctly wide and bulbous shaped tree trunk stores water for the tree so that it can survive drought conditions, thereby its other name “Tree of Life”.

PhotoPOSTcard: Dubai’s Burj AlArab Icon

Dubai’s Burj Al Arab has become the city’s most recognizable icon, which is saying a lot considering that this city has an abundance of uniquely shaped buildings. The sail shaped hotel sits on its own little island, and is the only (self proclaimed) seven star hotel in the world. The only way to experience the inside of the hotel is with a reservation for a room, a meal, or afternoon tea (which is what I did – more about that later).

At sunset, it looks like it is ready to set sail into the distant seas.
