Photo Location – Column and courtyard marble inlay detail at the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Abu Dhabi.
Besides its sheer size, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque is also a masterpiece of mosaic craftsmanship. Throughout the building, a variety of colored marble is used against a backdrop of white marble. On the floor of the large courtyard and on the many adjacent columns, the design shows lilies, roses, irises and tulips – all flowers that can be found in the MIddle East. This floral display was the result of an international collaboration between an English designer and Italian marble and mosaic specialists. This is a work of art with stone as both the canvas and the pallet.
