Time flies when you are having fun quilting. It is time again to share another quilt block in my personal quilt block of the month project.
It has been a hot and humid summer as is typical in the US mid Atlantic which means I have been staying inside quite a bit. Between the heat and not traveling right now, I have had a lot of time to work on quilting projects. I developed and finished an original quilt design with which I will be starting my own Etsy shop where I will be selling my quilt patterns. But more about that next month.
This month I chose to work with a summery lime green shade for my monthly quilt block and chose a 4 patch Half Square Triangle unit that I am calling “sailboat”. As I have mentioned before, for this Quilt Block of the Month project, I am exploring the many geometric possibilities of combining 4 Half Square Triangles (HST).

Using my quilt design software, I played around with the different geometric possibilities maintaining some form of symmetry since that is what we quilters like.
Using my fabric 4 HST units, I tried the various possibilities to decide which large block I ultimately wanted to put together.
As with the previous blocks I made in this series, I sewed a “positive” and “negative” version where I highlighted the different parts of the pattern with the colored fabric.
I also made the block in a scrappy version with my Kaffe Fasset scraps.
And for my red and cream quilt, I also put together the same block using two different red fabrics, which also gives the design a different look.

My starting half square triangle is 3.5 inches square. Once I’ve sewn 16 of them into a block, the size of the sewn block is 12.5 inches square which will finish at 12 inches in the quilt.

Fabric requirements
For each 12 inch finished block using two colors:
- Fat eighth or 1/8 yd of two contrasting colors, OR
- Enough fabric to cut 8 x 4 inch squares of each fabric color
For a quilt with twelve 12 inch blocks I am thinking I will need:
- 2.5 yards of each of two contrasting fabrics for the 12 blocks
- 3/4 yard fabric for sashing
- 1/3 to 1/2 yard for each border
- 1/2 yard for binding
