This amazingly beautiful mosque was started by its namesake, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Sheikh Zayed was the main driving force behind the creation of the United Arab Emirates, and was the country’s first president, holding the position for 33 years until his death in 2004. He used the oil wealth of the UAE to improve the conditions of those living in his country and also made significant donations to organizations abroad. He laid down a foundation for giving to charitable projects across the globe which is still followed by the country’s rulers today.
There are many memorials in his name throughout the world, including in the US with the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. and The Sheikh Zayed Tower at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
2018 is being celebrated as The Year of Zayed n the UAE to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sheikh Zayed. The mission of The Year of Zayed is to “Commemorate the life, values and achievements of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as an inspirational world leader, encouraging future generations to honour his legacy and fulfill his vision of prosperity, tolerance and peace”.
