I am continuing with my block of the month project as time allows. My sewing space continues to be in flux as we continue to work through our renovations, but I try to fit in time to quilt when I can so here now is block 6. I am halfway through this project and am excited to see it slowly coming together.
As with the other blocks in this project, this design continues to use half square triangles (HST). I continue my fascination with all the geometric possibilities that you can get when you combine 4 half square triangles into a unit and then combine four of those units into a block.
Triangle Fourplay – Quilt block of the Month – Block 6
I call this month’s block the “half chevron”.
This month I used a nice bright orange color which is part of the Allison Glass Insignia collection that I have been using for the other blocks in this project.
To decide which geometry to sew, I tried a number of different combinations with my quilt design software, focusing on those patterns that have an element of symmetry.
There were a number of designs this month that I really liked and I had a hard time choosing. In the end I decided on the 1st and 2nd block in the last row above.
And because making two blocks is not enough, I am also still making the same pattern is a scrappy look with my Kafffe Fasset leftover fabrics and also in a red and cream version.

If you want to sew along in this block of the month project, here are the measurements and fabric requirements.
My starting half square triangle is 3.5 inches square. Once I’ve sewn 16 of them into a block, the size of the sewn block is 12.5 inches square which will finish at 12 inches in the quilt.

Fabric requirements
For each 12 inch finished block using two colors:
- Fat eighth or 1/8 yd of two contrasting colors, OR
- Enough fabric to cut 8 x 4 inch squares of each fabric color
For a quilt with twelve 12 inch blocks I am thinking I will need:
- 2.5 yards of each of two contrasting fabrics for the 12 blocks
- 3/4 yard fabric for sashing
- 1/3 to 1/2 yard for each border
- 1/2 yard for binding
