‘This Is Africa” – Original Quilt Design

Africa inspired quilt

Quilt Inspiration – I found this original African fabric panel at a quilt show and knew I would need to use it in my African-inspired quilt as a colorful reminder of my first trip to Africa.

On that first trip, I only brought the quilt top to photograph because of space and luggage weight limitations. On that Africa trip, I also bought a batik panel at one of the roadside vendors, which I used on the back of the quilt. By the time I went back to Kenya on my most recent trip, the quilt was finished, and I took it back with me so I could photograph it complete on location.

I photographed the front of the quilt at the Kalleoni Maasai village in the Enonkishu Conservancy in Kenya. Two of the village’s lovely grandmothers posed with the quilt for me. On the left is Nashuru, and on the right is Nonkuta. Both ladies are 70 years old and have 40 children and grandchildren between the two of them.

The quilting was done by Cindy Carey of North Star Longarm Quilting.
