For the 9/11 memorial in New York city, the footprint of the original World Trade Center twin towers has been memorialized as two large reflecting pools. The design, which is called Reflecting Absence, comprises two one acre waterfalls, the largest man made waterfalls in the US.
The design symbolizes the lost lives and the physical void left behind. The names of all those that died in the attacks are inscribed on the sides of the memorial pools. Surrounding the two pools are over 400 trees. The design “conveys a spirit of hope and renewal, and creates a contemplative space separate from the usual sights and sounds of a bustling metropolis”.
The memorial is especially pretty at dusk once the pools are lit up for the evening. In this photo, the Oculus, which is the World Trade Center transportation hub, can be seen in the background.
