Dutchman’s Puzzle Variations
Dutchman’s Puzzle quilt photographed with the Dutchman’s Puzzle block on the Tualatin Valley, Oregon Quilt Barn Trail.
My Dutchman’s Puzzle Quilt was one of the first quilts I finished. I cannot take credit for this design – it was a block of the month at a local quilt shop about 15 or so years ago. I did change the layout, sewing the blocks together in rows rather than putting them on-point. Doing so turned it into a smaller wall hanging which is what I wanted (though after the fact I did think the on-point layout looked nicer). Each block in the quilt is a variation on the Dutchman’s Puzzle quilt block. Changing the position and combination of light and dark fabrics gives each block a completely different look, even though they all use the same pattern.
When I saw that one of the quilt blocks on the Tualatin Valley Quilt Barn Trail was the Dutchman’s Puzzle, I knew that I had to photograph my quilt with that Quilt Barn Trail block. The Quilt Barn Trail’s Dutchman’s Puzzle block is located on the Old hall of the St. Francis Catholic Church in Sherwood, OR. The Old Hall is used for sewing charity quilts and also for food distribution. (Thank you to Paul Mayer for being a pair of hands and holding the quilt up for me to photograph).
